 Silent Wandering
« Thread Started on Nov 14, 2008, 11:13pm »

Silently walking through the forest, Ilkka was somewhat relaxed. To anyone but his own kind, he would appear as a normal human. Blond hair, bright blue eyes and tanned skin. But to his own species, he appeared quite different. His natural skin colour was pure white with a slight blue tinge, but a big difference was the large wings he had. The same colour as his skin but with silver and gold flecks, his wing span was just over 25 feet. Even for his own kind which always had large wingspans, that was big.

Keeping away from the places that were usually busier, his large sharp eyes scanned the forest. Seeing as he was alone, he was about as relaxed as he would ever get without a mate to watch over him. Right now though, his watch was a mixture of looking out for other life forms, and finding something to eat.

Kael soared over the forest in her owl's form, investigating the fringes of the magicless land out of curiosity. She felt reasonably safe, she could hold her owl form for ten hours, and only about three has passed. So, with a sizable margin of safety, she investigated anything that caught her eye, and the tanned, blond, very thin boy who was the only human within leagues certainly caught her eye. She chose her perch with a little care, being far enough away that most humans would fail to notice her. she then watched the boy, noticing how alert he was.

Scanning the forest, Ilkka noticed an owl land on a perch a bit away. Ilkka looked at it for a few moments before deciding that it wasn't worth the effort. He would need something bigger than owl to satisfy his hunger, and besides it would most likely take more effort to catch it that he would gain from eating it. Deer would be nice, plenty big enough to satisfy his appetite.

A little further alone it was not a deer but a rather bush with red berries on it, which he recognised as edible. Well, to him at least; by observation they seemed to be poisonous to humans. Knowing that no one was around he dropped his magic that made him appear human. While a lot of the time it was automatic, it was still nice to drop it every now and then.

Ilkka stretched his large wings before sitting down and folding them neatly, sitting down on the ground carefully to avoid sitting on his wings. Once he was comfortable he picked a few berries and slowly ate them. They would do for now, but he still wanted something large soon.

Kael's dark, almond shaped eyes widened when the boy abruptly changed his appearance, from blond, blue eyed and tan, to blond blue eyed and blue white with... Wings? She uttered a soft, surprised screech, then froze, fearful that she'd given her own self away.

Still watching him she tensed to fly, for if he decided she was some sort of threat, she'd need to get back across the border to shift, most probably straight to wolf form, though mabey her birth form would be wiser, having the ability to speak.

Upon hearing a soft, surprised sounding screech from the nearby owl and tensed up again. That screech sounded unnatural to him, and Ilkka immediately became suspicious of it. Automatically his magic came into play, changing his appearance back to his human appearance. Abandoning the few berries left on the bush he stood up and looked at the owl.

Watching the owl silently, he tensed up and unfolded his wings slightly so that he could take flight if he needed to. It then struck him that if what ever was pretending to be that owl had seen what he actually appeared like, his magic appearance would be useless. But, even so, he felt a little better when he knew that he just looked like an average human.

Naohseenanacoofah Wilnigheltanon had disappeared swiftly into the underbrush when he had been alerted to the human's presence a while back. He had decided to stay low for precautionary reasons, but now was doubtful as to whether these measures were necessary. He had hardly been surprised at the magnificent wings, but obviously the creature was trying to hide this unique trait.

What was he?

Wil was not sure, but the creature had scared away the rabbits he had been hunting. He needed to go find them before they got far, but he also did not want to delay his movements because of the creature with the wings.

Then again, it would be illogical to give away his presence after hiding so quietly.

Wil decided he would back off for now and then pursue his prey later when the forest was empty of outsiders.

Silently, and skillfully, Wil slowly backed up into the unfamiliar underbrush. He was not quite sure where he was going, but he had come to know the forest well and trusted his own skill.

Suddenly, Wil realized that he had been foolish by watching the stranger and not his back. He only found this out when he felt himself sliding down a steep hill. His fall was noisy, painful, and created a lot of dust.

After about ten seconds, Wil's reckless descent stopped at the bottom of the sharp hill.

He lay in the dirt, pain traveling through his body and wondering what his next step should be. After all, he had just unintentionally given himself away.

He quickly concluded that the most logical course of action would be to wait and see if the stranger had really heard him or if he was mistaken.

If he was mistaken, excellent, if not, he would have to see if the creature was a threat to him or not. He would have to kill him if he was a threat, otherwise, he would let the fellow be.

Wil lay perfectly still, his cat-like eyes mostly closed, but he still could see if anyone was headed for him. He waited patiently for any sort of sign that would help him decide on his next step.

Ilkka jumped as he heard a loud crashing sound somewhere behind him. Turning around, he looking in that direction deciding whether he should find out what that sound was or stay away. After a few moments Ilkka crept silently to where he had heard the sound, and soon found himself standing on top of a sharp hill. Looking down, he saw a man of some sort, clearly not human but looking similar, lying in the dirt at the bottom.

He had clearly fallen down the hill, and with his eyes mostly closed Ilkka wondered if he was hurt. "Are you okay?" Ilkka said, clearly sounding like he hadn't spoken for a long time. Which was true, his species language didn't include speech of any kind, but he still knew some human language.

"Are you okay?" Wil heard the creature say. It was odd, the fellow sounded a little. . . . .unpracticed in speech or as if he hadn't spoken in a while.

Wil decided it was best to stand up. After all, if this fellow was an enemy, it would be illogical to inquire as to whether Wil was alright or not.

Then again, most creatures were not logical.

Still on his guard, Wil got to his feet with his hand resting casually on his throwing knife.

"Yes, quite," Wil said clearly as all the pain faded. "My deepest and most sincere apologies if I have caused you concern of any sort." He said just to make sure the fellow didn't become annoying and pestering like most people. He had had enough experiences with worried humans to last him a life time.

But then again, he doubted that this fellow was human.

Wil's keen purple eyes scanned the creature again. He was curious about his species and about his wings most of all. Wil was also curious as to how the creature could still be standing when he looked so thin and malnourished.

It was logical to assume that this a probable trait of his since Wil had never seen anyone like him before and anything was possible at this point.

Wil realized he was more than likely offending the creature through his observational staring. Wil's gaze quickly averted to the steep hill and he wondered if it was worth his while to climb back up it or if he should stay where he was.

Kael was just as startled as the strange boy to hear a loud crashing somewhere off behind him, and actually took to the air with her alarm. Silently, she glided to see who or what had made the racket, far outstripping the boy who remained grounded for the time being. what she saw made her wish quite strongly that they were two or three miles south, where she'd be able to shift. as it was she could only be an observer. she perched on a limb where she could easily see both people, the apparently injured pale young man and the not-as-he-seemed blond boy. She was fairly certain that both would be able to see her, but she reasoned that niether would percive he as a particular threat. she heard their rather formal exchange, and wondered what species each belonged to, neither appeared human, and niether had familiar traits.

Simply looking at the man as he stood up, Ilkka noticed that the one of his hands was casually resting on his knife. A mild panic rose up in Ilkka at seeing the man holding the knife, and he backed away a few steps. Holding a slight submissive stance meant to show that he meant no harm, Ilkka unfolded his wings slightly so that if he needed to flee he could do so quickly.

He looked over at the owl briefly, which had moved. Ilkka was pretty sure that the owl was not really an owl, although he was not sure what else it would really be. Mind you, he had heard tales of humans turning into other creatures, so maybe that is what the owl was. One of those humans that could change into animals.

Wil sighed and moved his hand. This fellow was obviously not going to put up a fight.

"My most sincere apologies for alarming you," Wil said dryly. He had no reason for staying here any longer, unless it was to gather information.

He suddenly noted that the submissive creature kept looking at or for something.

"Pardon me, sir, but, if you believe me to be a threat it is illogical to avert your eyes at something else. I do not have my hand on my knife, but I could still harm you, so why look away?" Wil was actually puzzled and his usually passive voice betrayed him when the slightest hint of curiosity dropped. Maybe the creature was actually very powerful, but was really making Wil drop his guard so that he could attack him easier.

That was logical.

Wil's hand went back to his knife. Was this fellow playing with him? He was not afraid, merely cautious. He didn't plan on getting harmed any time soon as it would delay his mission. Maybe the fellow was trouble after all.

Kael, in another form, would have snorted. As it was, she made a funny little sound that could be construed as derisive laughter. The pale man evidently had yet to notice her or her anomalous behavior, oh how she wished this meeting had been more southward! She shook her head slightly, and ruffle her feathers, continuing her observation of the two unusual males.

It took Ilkka a few moments to realise what the man was saying, as Ilkka wasn't overly good at human languages. Too complicated for Ilkka's liking. When he realised what the man was saying, Ilkka quickly looked back at him. Fear rose in Ilkka's eyes when he saw that the man had his hand on his knife, and he looked like he was ready to use it. Backing away quickly but silently, when he was safely away Ilkka turned around and ran a short distance southwards.

Stopping after a couple of minutes, Ilkka looked and listened for a few moments. Still quite alert, his eyesight fell on several rabbits that were up ahead. Suddenly feeling his hunger again, Ilkka took his time to get into position and had soon killed two of the rabbits. The rest would be left so that there would still be rabbits in the future.

Wil watched the creature run away with dulled interest. He obviously didn't want to fight, but Wil still wondered about the wings.

Wil glanced around his surroundings briefly. He was sure that he sensed another intelligent mind, but he couldn't seem to locate it. His mind honing senses had been poor lately. He could still speak to others telepathically, but his other skills, such as locating minds, were preforming badly.

It didn't matter anyway, he had to go find those rabbits. If the creature or anyone else bothered him, he would just have to kill them.

Still, it never hurt to be cautious.

Silently and skillfully, Wil disappeared into the underbrush and started moving south.

Standing still Ilkka took a few moments to check his surroundings and see if anything was near. He thought that he could hear a creature moving in his general direction but it was far away, and Ilkka wasn't overly concerned about it. But, just to be safe, he moved a little east and found a secluded spot where he could be in peace.

Sitting down, he put both the rabbits on the ground and looked at them for a moment. Not enough to fully satisfy his appetite, they would be enough for now. Picking one of the rabbits up he used his sharp teeth to make a few cuts and skinned it. The skins would be buried later, as Ilkka had no use for them. After checking his surroundings again, he started carefully eating the rabbit he was holding.

Wil soon picked up the trail of the rabbits and began following it stealthily. He moved quickly through the underbrush and managed to get very close to his victims.

Wil decided he wouldn't need to use his bow, but could use his throwing knives instead.

Wil suddenly became alert all over as his senses picked up an intelligent mind. . . . .no, there was more than one, there were seven.

Wil choose a nearby tree and climbed it with lightning speed. He was close to the top when he stopped to search the forest for the humans. They were obviously humans because their brain functions were based on emotions.

How flawlessly illogical, Wil thought with disgust.

He spotting a party of humans some fifty yards away. They were moving slowly and they were Vestanostains.

How silly, they're still tracking me. . . . .I should wait here for a while and see what they are doing. They could just be after research specimens besides myself. . . .

Ilkka had just finished eating the first rabbit, and was just about to start on the second when he both heard and smelt humans nearby. Freezing, he concentrated of tracking where they were, and even though they weren't really close they were still uncomfortably close. Quickly burying the few remains of the first rabbit, he stood up and picked up the second rabbit. Pausing for a few moments to check where the humans were, Ilkka silently set off in the opposite direction.

Ilkka moved through the forest in a near silent jog, faster than a walk but at a pace that he would be able to keep up for a long time if needed. Every now and then he paused, using his senses to figure out where the humans were and move away from they. Getting slightly nervous, Ilkka unfolded his wings slightly. Mind you, to humans he would look just like a human. But, he still liked to avoid them when he could.

Kael circled high overhead, wincing at the brightness of the daylight, curiosity lead her to watch both of the unusual young men from above, and she noticed when they both reacted to the presence of the human party as if they were a threat, the winged on by fleeing, and the other by keeping out of sight. She decided to lead the humans astray, partly because she did not want to end up involved in a fight, but also because it suited her sense of humor. She swooped down infront of the party and alighted on a branch, just barely within their sight, hoping to lead them on by hopping from branch to branch.

Although he was normally quite alert, his mind wandered for a split second to how much easier it would all be if his mate hadn't been killed. Having to be so alert all the time wore him down, and although it wasn't bad on his own it would be nice sometimes to have a mate around. But as Ilkka knew it only took a moment to get into trouble.

Before he realised where he was he found himself just about to walk in front of them. Freezing, he stayed like that for a few moments before silently backing off hoping that they hadn't detected his presence. Even though they would see him as just another human, he was still deathly afraid of them.

Wil saw the odd bird leading the humans astray.

Was the interesting creature trying to help?

Wil abruptly felt a familiar ping. That bird was the intelligent mind that he had not been able to detect. He was certain of it.

Wil started trailing the very humans he was fleeing from as they followed the owl. His curiosity was aroused. He wanted to know more about that bird.

But he wouldn't be able to communicate with it with those blasted humans around.

Wil considered getting rid of them. After all, it would take jsut one mind trick to send them away.

But his telepathy powers were not functioning as they should. It would be risky. He was curious what would happen if he attempted using them in his condition. It would be illogical, but it would also be logical to know his limits.

Wil stopped crawling and sat up. He concentrated and locked onto the minds.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

The humans suddenly stopped following the bird and spun around.

"There he is! Over there!"

They ran the other direction enthusiastically.

Wil's eyes opened.

He realized how foolish he had been.

He heard nothing but the thoughts of the humans and that other mind. The voices screamed in his ears. He felt as if he was suffocating. Wil caught himself with one arm. He tried breathing slowly but found that he was already hyperventilating.

How flawlessly stupid of him.

His head pounded horribly and black dots appeared in front of his eyes. His stomach heaved and he vomited all over the underbrush. He kept heaving for a few moments before the nausea passed. Through his clouded vision, he noted blood dripping from his nose.

This cannot possibly be good. How silly of me.

Kael felt the pale, violet eyed man try something with the humans, and also saw that it evidently did not have the desired effect, as the humans turned for him, and he seemed incapacitated. [i] he must have tried something magic-based! doesn't he know nothing like that works up here!?!{/i] She screeched an owl's warcry and dove at the lead human, he talon's spread before her to rake him. He ducked, but she, acting in a way so uncharactaristic for a barn owl, had spooked them, and with just two more passes, they left, ducking phantoms. Kael then perched near the incapacitated man, hoping he'd recovered enough for her to try and persuade him to go south. She really wanted to be able to shift back to her normal form so she could talk!
